Here is some of Diane Arbus's pieces. She used an analogue camera for her shots which obviously eliminates colour, so she does express tonal features in her work. She also works with portraits and mundane life. I think that she is a very effective artist. I do like her work, she makes every portrait look more dramatic than it probably was. I think the purpose of this was to give each face a personality through the image. And if so then it has achieved its purpose. I think i would like to look further into this artist. And see if i could take aspects out of the artists work and place it into mine. For example the expression would be fun to experiment with.

William Klein

This is a small example of William kleins work. I am a huge fan of this artist and will definitely have aspects of him in my work, the reason i like this artist is because i like his use of mix media, it brings colour to his analogue pictures. Which i think is super effective. But even the ones that are missing colour, for example the one with the gun, are still so dramatic. I think i will be using the mix media and the exotic way of dressing in my work in the future

Sherrie Levine

Sherrie Levine uses her photographs and turns them into other pieces work. But she is does use analogue also. She focuses on portraiture and then makes them into other photos.

Im not the biggest fan of her, however i do think its useful as she is focused on a pathway that i may take

Robert Rauschenburg

This is Robert Rauschenburg. I like his work because it is a mixture between photography and painting. He also uses colour quite alot in his pieces, which is a route i could take when looking at my own pieces. I think the chaotic style that he goes for makes it so unique and in a way it brings a whole new meaning to his work than what it actually is. He does it based on themes. For example he was looking at government when he was making the Kennedy piece.

I think if i were to develop this i would use my theme as the title, and then base the whole work around that. kind of like a visual mind map.

John Baldessari

This is john baldessari's 'dots' work. I have taken particular interest in this work because i have taken a liking to concealment. Its also how reckless he places the circles which intrigues me. I think it will be a good idea for me to follow this artist, as i think concealment is an interesting style to follow.

Rineke Dijkstra

Rineke Dijkstra is a predominantly studio artist who occasionally takes social photos. And although i am a massive fan of their studio work i am failing to see, after doing some more research, how i could link this artist to my project.

Gillian Wearing

Gillian Wearing is a social photographer who uses signs in her photos. This is so she can communicate the subjects thoughts, i think this is a very effective way of telling a story. This would help me in a documentative style of photography that i want to take. The way i could use it is going up to public and asking them to write one thing that they are always thinking of. And then take the picture.

Stephen Gill

This is Stephens 'talking to ants' shoot. I have taken interest into this shoot because he looks at social life and places objects, small objects, into his lens. If i am to do something similar i wont be placing things into my lens but i could using editing to make it look like i have. I think its a nice way to use old things and give them a purpose. I also like the use of colours in his work.

Ralph Eugene Meatyard

Ralph Eugene Meatyard is a photographer who uses an analogue camera. He tries to give a creepy feel to his photos especially in his mask shoot. But he also has a social photography style, which will link to my work. he obviously only looks at tonal textures as he doesn't use colour.

Richard avedon

Here is some of Richard Avedon's work. He is a portrait/ social photographer. He also focuses on tonal texture as his photos were black and white. I like his work where the subject 'stands out in a crowd', I think it would be fun to try and do something like this, but i will have to make sure i do it ethically.

Fazal Sheikh  and Ad Van Denderen

Here are Sheikn and van Denderen's works, the reason i put them next to eachother is because i think that they both have extremely similar styles. Although they take photos foreign locations and i am unable to take the photos for that reason i do think that i could link it towards a social class theme. I also think that the fact that Sheikn takes the photos in the middle of no where and Van Denderen takes them in a working aesthetic it makes them really powerful so i might try and link some photos towards that.

London trip

On the London trip we went to The Natural History Museum, and although the pieces of history were interesting, for the purpose of my project, i was more interested in the patterns and the architecture. For example there was an expedition that focused on history of earth through rocks. The pieces of dirt stacking up and solidifying through out the years has formed these amazing patterns.

I think these could be useful as a background in my photos or perhaps even as a source of concealment.

20220321_111907881_iOS.heic
20220321_111922549_iOS.heic

As well as the rocks giving patterns, the actual building was packed with them too. As it was built as a museum it was filled with features that would relate to the artefacts inside.

For example the twisting pattern on this pillar stood out to me as it was purely out of rock, and in the time of making this building, which was in 1873, it must have been quite the achievement. As well as the ceilings and how delicate the paintings on top are. I think going there has really inspired me to use the visual language in my work.

20220321_113426681_iOS.heic

While looking around the museum i stumbled across this fossilised shell. The reason this stood out to me is because it is a perfect example of the Fibonacci sequence, or more commonly known as the golden mean. Which is obviously very important in the photography world.

camera equipment

portaits

The 50mm lens is one of the best lens sizes for portraits. Many portrait photographers praise 50mm lenses for their versatility and it's not hard to see why – they strike a balanced “middle-area” focal length.

The primary purpose of the tripod is to hold a camera completely steady—zero movement and vibration; however, the tripod is very, very far from a one-size-fits-all-photographic accessory.

A flash gun is a term that refers to what most photographers call a speedlight flash. A flash gun is made to attach to the hot shoe of a camera and automatically fires when a picture is taken. Flash guns can also be used for off-camera flash, where the flash is not touching the camera.

In photography and cinematography, a reflector is an improvised or specialised reflective surface used to redirect light towards a given subject or scene

landscapes

Wide angle and ultra-wide angle lenses are the most popular lenses for landscape photography. Their focal lengths usually range from 14-35mm, though some can be as wide as 10 or 12mm.

Where are people happy?

Web capture_12-5-2022_114717_www.nationalworld.com.jpeg

From this survey of the happiest places to live you can see that 7 out of 10 places that are happy are people who live in towns, arguably a rural area. 3 of the places are citys
(im counting Anglesey as a city as it counts the entire island)

From this i initially assumed that rural areas would be happier.

After doing my research and project i can conclude that although it was a small group of people, cities are slowly becoming more happy.

Photography books

book.jfif

For my presentation, i am going to use a photography book. I am going to lay it out in a portrait, text, scenery. Which will work well with my urban theme as its not just portraits its also scenery.

Web capture_16-5-2022_14158_photon.si.jpeg
Web capture_16-5-2022_141814_photon.si.jpeg

I think that i want a photo book in my final project, i think that it would be a good demonstration of a high level presentation. I did some research of universities and the main way of their BA (Hons) students expo their work is through photography books.

Web capture_16-5-2022_142612_thephotographersgallery.org.uk.jpeg

This is from the Soho Photography quater, they printed large scale photos on the wall of the buildings. Obviously i wont be able to do that for my expo but i do like the idea of large screen prints of my photos. Perhaps if i added text next to them they would link more, i am also a fan of it being infront of brick as it fits in with my urban theme.

Similar to the previous expo style, however this one i would put it on a fence style thing. This would give the effect of an actual urban piece of art. Meaning the way i show the exabition off will become part of the art.

Thomas Ruff is a photographer whose work i can follow for the exhibition aspects. He follows a large and simple approach which i think is good as i like the fact that theres nothing to distract you from the photos.
